Suomi, the name of Finland in native Finnish, is a word of debated origin.
Some say it means “the land of a thousand lakes“, referring to the beautiful landscape of this country, covered in forests and dotted with lakes. Others say it shares origins with Sámi, the indigenous people of the Scandinavian peninsula.
What is certain is that this is a beautiful country of contras: where the sun never sets for half of the year, creating eternal sunsets as the sun dances on the horizon; and where the darkness and the cold bring elves (tonttu) and trolls (peikko) out of the forests.
